My old man was t-boned in is XKR at the weekend - he was fine, but the car needs a cople of new panels, wheel and rear bumper :(

He didn't phone to let me know that though - just that he's got a Carrera 2 as a courtesy car, and has seen the light! So bye-bye XKR.

The spanner in the works is a friend of a friend's Aston Martin V8 Vantage that he sat in recently.

So big question - does anyone have a contact at a dealership that would let him and me, rather than him and salesman, have an extended test drive in each? ie a couple of hours at least?

Go to the same dealership from whom you bought your TT from. Leave your car with them whilst you take an extended test drive. It's unlikely the would refuse.

Most dealerships will give you an extended drive aslong as you are serious , maybe a bit of gentle persuasion is needed at times, ie like Nick said leave your car with them or just tell them its alot of money to be spending on a vehicle and you want to be sure.

they should give you an extended drive especially with the car you drive + you don't look like a scruff.

It may have to be booked in advance so they can add you to their insurance and they may ask for proof of residence, insurance and drivers license :) !!

but should be no biggy with a 996 Turbo !

Thanks guys!

Have just spoken to my OPC, and they are happy to loan us a 997 C4S vert for a couple of hours without a salesman, and they are trying to find a Vantage for us too ;)

Aston Martin V8 Vantage that he sat in recently.

What do you think? I sat in one and thought it was nothing more than window dressing. Looks good but even the ride as a passenger was terrible. Wallowy through the corners and harsh when it did not need to be. The engine bay looks a mess! Can't help but think it's another Aston made with scrap parts. DB9 on the ohther hand .......class

...Carrie's Gran has already said I look like old Huge Fanley Wateringhole, who I'm presuming is the River Cottage fella.

Oh, and cheers Ken ;)

One of my mates and his brother both bought 997 Carrera's in 2006, one then bought a Aston V8 whilst the other ordered a 997 Turbo.

On this years Cannonball we were still in the Carrera and his brother was in the Aston V8 and we were able to run then against each other, the Porsche left it on straight line speed and in the corners and was just a much better set up car all round.

But saying that the Aston is a lovely looking little car, and as there were 5 of them on the rally in the end they were all known as "the fastest sounding none moving car" that car sounds like it is flying when it really isn't even moving!

Mind you I still wouldn't say no to either:D

I think he'd prefer a DBS, but there's fat chance of getting one of them in the near future!

I love the sound and the look of AMs, but would only have one as a 3rd or 4th car

I drove the Aston round thruxton a few weeks ago - I thought it was excellent, agreed it aint the fastest car I have been in but it was excellent in the corners and sounded how a car should sound - did not find it soft or harsh - breaks were ok, interior was nice just lacked a bit of punch.

Can't believe that nobody else has made the James May connection yet... :D

The Astons are pretty and they cruise well, but they're no 996/997, back-to-back I'm sure it'll be no contest - which is probably why your OPC are happy to find one and prove it! :)
