6.5" will fit in there as long as the mounting depth isn't too deep.
I would look at Rainbow components, SLC range is a good price performance speaker.
What head unit are you using?? This is far more important than speakers and unless you change this or add an amp you are not going to see much gain.

sorry for the late reply,
as gizze has said the 6.5" comps will go but over sized speakers such as focal will not fit. there are quite a few to choose for including the rainbow range. my personal choice would be the jl audio vr650 csi comps.

sorry to butt in on your thread but does the Jl audio vr650 require mods to fit? or is it plug n play like the rainbow speakers

it will certainly fit but you will need to hard wire it in.

Thanks guys for the posts.
When you say hard wire it in, what do you mean exactly. Are you saying that I cant just wire up the new speakers using the old connections. I dont mind doing a bit of soldering.
Whats the cost of the ones you have suggested, please

yep it involves soldering new wires and new connectors onto the existing bmw wiring. the jl audio vr 650 csi comps are £199.99

Bit more than I really wanted to pay, thinking along the lines of the Rainbow: SL 130- 13cm speakers, or something similar in 16.5cm, would these be any good?.
Appreciate your help.

If you go for anything go 16cm/6.5" as you will get alot more mid range warmth.
SLX265's would be the cheapest Rainbows to go for imho.
You could look for some used ones on the talk audio forum...
