View Full Version : slight problem...
my wife reversed into someone in her car, and smashed the headlight and dented the wing a lil of the white p reg escort.
He got a quote from a garage for repairs which camje to £235.
Highly excessive I thought!!
You could get a headlight for £20 and wing for £30 from scrap yard? So I offered him a generous £150... he declined.
However the insurance company have now said they are likely to write his car off after it is assessed, as its not worth £500 in value.
...and he would rather I paid him £235 in cash?! Pleading with me as he has to move to Cornwall from Sheffield at the weekend.
What do u think? £235 cash is well high. and wifeys insurance is protected, and wont go up that much via insurance at renewal.

Tell him to go eat a dick. Either go through insurance or take £150 and tell him that's the only option on the table. He'll take £235, get it repaired for £50 then laugh at you. Your offer of £150 is more than gracious

Thats exactly what I thought Fas! He keeps saying he hasnt got time for a scrap yard etc... I shouldn't be a soft touch.. and stick to my gunz!
£235 is ridiculous! I'll post a pic in morning of his car when I'm at work...

To be honest £235 isn't bad,the wings on an Escort aren't bolt on,so by the time you take into account parts its not extreme.Unless you know a bodyshop that can repair it for less ? He also doesn't have to accept having his car written off either,he can insist your insurance company put the car back to pre accident condition if you go that route

How bad is the dent on the wing? Could you not push it out and get a light for him yourself? Not being funny, on a car of that age and value it isn't even worth the effort of getting it fixed, I'd put money on him changing the light and leaving the dent if you give him cash.

i agree, stick to your guns and i'm sure he'll agree to the £150.
Your wife hit him. Be happy he even offered not going through insurance. Pay the £235 and make him sign a note saying its over ect.. You wont starve over £85...and on your record it will be like it never happened. Your wife caused him enough nuisance as it is.
Otherwise if your convinced it wont affect your insurance much, use it. End of the day that is the point of insurance.

I was starting to think that I was the only one who saw it from the third party point of view  good to see someone (Afif) else looked at that view as well

I kinda agree with Afif. It isnt always so much the money when you get whacked, but the ballache of an inconvenience that it can be. To get it sorted the cheapest way possible would involve time and effort on his part, finding the bits and getting the work done. Its fair enough if he cant be arsed.
Providing the quote is legit, and the total sum of damage caused to him was £235, you cant really argue against it? Could just offer £200 cash.

Well at least the amount has gone up now,but why dont we try a bit of role reversal here.If someone reversed into your car and the quote was £235 to repair it would you accept £150 or £200? if you answer honestly no you wouldn't.Pay the man his £235 and put an end to it ;)

that's not the point though is it? Sid's saying that based on the circumstances, he can get the car repaired for less than £100, and there's an offer on the table of £150. He feels the guy is trying it on with a quote of 150% more than what it should be. You know as well as I do, if you drive a £500 shitter, you're not going to take it to a top class coachworks, you're going to take the money, put a new headlamp in it, keep the dent as a battle scar and pocket the rest.

Then he should ask for a second quote from a mutually agreed garage. If it comes in at the same figure then the guy is owed that amount, as that is the damage caused to his property (even if a shitbox). What the guy decided to do with the money if it was paid in cash is irrelevant. He could do nothing and go on a small holiday for a week if he wanted to. that would of course be tight and asshole-esque, but still.

lets be honest the balls in his court really ..... and at the end of the day what he does with the cash is really up to him it is his car that was hit after all and at no fault of his own
I appreciate that nobody wants to pay more than they need to for anything but i think in this situation its his call
personally i would either ask him to show u a quote and if its decent pay him the cash. or offer to repair it for him and put the car back to its original condition.
if your wife's car was damaged then it may be worthwhile going through insurance for both parties.
Just go through insurance, why pay for insurance then have to go through double checking quotes and all that other bollocks?

Accept the quote - but agree only to pay the garage the repair cost IE pay the bill from the garage and NOT the individual. If he is unhappy with this he is clearly not going to get the repair done!
If I was hit by someone and I was in my good car I would want it done on the insurance AND done at a very good workshop.
Think of it the other way round.
If the guy expects you to hand him the cash then stick to your £150

I said in my earlier reply if Sid can get it done cheaper,go get it done.

I was the one that offered him cash to make him go away, and feel better about himself... with cash in his pocket.
Pay the £235 ..... You wont starve over £85....
Its still £235 more than I would pay than if go via insurance.
The guy now doesnt want to go via insurance... but I know for a fact that £235 is excessive. I can get it fixed for much less, but he is unwilling to come to me for the repair.
The Damage:
