Got my insp2 for the M in a months time - OOOOOOOOOO its gonna hurt :D . You may get £100 off a price by bouncing dealers off each other but in all reality if you can dip below £800 you are doing well.

Cotswold BMW in Gloucester are advertising inspection II at £650.... then i should think you will have parts on top of that?

how old is your M?

scotthall BMW in leeds are doing half price services on all cars 5 years or older. I assume it includes M cars.
I just had my 330 sport done. insp 1 and brake fluid service for £150 I think it was.

I would say find the print out of what they do in a type II inspection, throw it on a lift and do it yourself... the cheapest way possible that i know how. I am no certified mechanic, but i know what a bad seal looks like or if a belt is dry rotting and i can change any part i need to on my car. I presume its not that different from car to car.

not easy if you arent mechanically minded like that. I personally dont know my way around the underside of a car at all, it just all blends into one big lump of metal... Plus, a good official service history, especially for insp 2 on an M3 is pretty valuable at resale.

Insp2 involves having the head open and performing fairly specific tasks on the top-end of the engine. I wouldn't recommend that to anybody who isn't 100% comfortable with doing it, as one mistake with tasks like those (e.g. adjusting a tappet when the camshaft isn't rotated to it's correct position) will work out a damn sight more expensive than the original service would have..

I must be thinking of the wrong inspection then... must be the Type I inspection... sorry mates. I didnt think a Type II inspection went that deep but i have been wrong before. Thanks for sorting that out for me chaos.

HAHA again my bad... did some more reading and found that the Type II inspection you are talking about is only on the S54 engines... i sometimes forget that everyone in the M3 Bimmer world has a better engine then me. Thanks for kickin me down chaos! Thanks alot.

Well its a 52 plate, so i suppose it is 5 years old now, so I guess the best place to get a deal would be scothall in leeds, anyone know of any others who could do any better? If so let me know. It has to be a dealer though!

Thanks for the help guys.

I doubt any dealer will beat half-price. give scothall a ring bud.

My local dealer quotes £950 for the insp2. It is alot of labour, over 6 hours on the M3. They have to check and reshim the valve clearances as the S54 uses solid lifters, they also replace the diff and gearbox oil and then do the more general tasks such as spark plugs, air and microfilters, engine oil etc.

What sort do you have?

M54 2002 325i :-/ they auto adjust so they dont need reshimming when doing the type 2. Which is why i suggested he do it himself. I can change all my fluids and parts myself so i printed the type one and type two inspection sheets and i take my car to the garage, lift it and i am off.

Er... OK!

We were talking about Bharwad's car, and offering recommendations to him. When did we start talking about your 325??? I know how the M54 engine works but we were discussing S54 servicing and maintenance...which is why I was talking about what I was talking about!

Now then, back on topic, if it has to be dealer and you live that close to Leeds, it's a no-brainer and you should have called them already. :p

The tappet shims are measured and adjusted if necessary on every inspection service on an s54. Inspection 1 and inspection 2. ;)
