Hey guys, just wondering what your opinions are for tv/sat for the bmw is. I was originally going to go with the OEM stuff, but should I be considering a different make like alpine? would it look just as nice?
I have a lot of divx videos, i would love to have a player in the car that plays them. i remember last year when i was looking, ther was one make, but it wasn't a full size screen. It was slightly bigger than a normal stereo.

Another reason for going for a brand name, is that the built in amps would probably be better than the OEM stuff. Which means i wouldn't need to upgrade my speakers.
I dont want the ones where the screen comes out and sits in front of the vents lol, that just looks silly. It has to be flat inside the dash.
I would be greatful if anyone can give me advice about this stuff.

i spoke to a guy selling the kenwood one, and he said it wont fit the bmws :( he said i would have to get a flat screen, and have the rest of the devices hidden. :(

but that alpine one doesnt have a divx player :( it sticks out a little too.
I have another alternative, which is to use an ipod to play my videos off the stereo screen. Although that would mean a lot of converting, I would have a lot of vids on a 40 gig ipod.

Adood what was the final cost of installing the Alpine unit?
And is that the W202 mentioned earlier?
Im interested in installing Nav and open to more wallet friendly alternatives to OEM, providing the quality is still good obviously ;)

the costs are as fellows
Alpine IVA W202E with Ipod link= 966 USD(Shipping from HK to Saudi included in the price)
Bezel = 210 USD (Mybimmer.net)
Alpine Steering interface + BMW aerial Adapter = 80 GBP (or 70 can remember from IceCold)
Alpine KCE-300BT (Bluetooth) = 170 USD (from amazon.com)
I didn't get the Nav unit because they don't have a map of Saudi so don't how much that would cost, also there are some other stuff like plastic , Epoxys...etc that I needed for the heater box mod
I can say that quality is better than OEM bluetooth works well , you get full control of iPod (I have an 80 GB version) also can play DVD (mp3 , video ...etc and also double layer DVDs 8.5 GB)

I fitted the alpine ice/sat nav system and have not regreted it one bit, I get a better system in sat nav. expandable, touchscreen control and overall better sound. We have the OEm system in my wifes X5 and it does not compare in my opinion. Infact even she prefers using the alpine system. But your choice at the end of the day,The oem look looks great in the car but wished it just preformed better.

hello mate,
to fit the alpine or kenwood model you will have to modify the heater box that is located just behind the air con control panel. this isnt that hard to do but most audio shop will not entertain doing it. i have done the job a dozen times now and it is easy to do.

how much would you do it for? the kenwood system costs about £750, how much would the rest of the stuff come too? like bluetooth, freeview, steering wheel control etc

as Andy said you need to do the heater box mod, I've done it my self(with the help of my cousin) and I've never touched a car headunit in my life ... and Andy has fitted them before so I'm sure your in safe hands :)

The Kenwood navi is not a bad unit done lots of them abd the bluetooth unit is also good. But for navigation you cant beat Alpine you pay more but its far better.
