I'm thinking of fitting an intake on my 330 ci but can't decide which is best and there are so many to choose from. Is it better to have one such as the gruppe m which seems to fit in place of the original box or one on a long tube which sits behind the front bumper. I can see that advantages of the second one because i assume in would draw in colder air but then the gruppe m seems to be recommended by alot of people. I've read loads of posts about this topic but i'm still confused.

Depends on what you want & your budget.
GruppeM are about 3 x the price of copies. (£433 direct)
Personnally, I fitted a copy from ssdd-motorsport.com and (I am very pleased with it  ).You can also get others from ca-automotive our other sponsors.

Out of everything i've looked at so far, the intake you've got is looking like the one i'll prbably get. Did you notice any change in performance with it fitted?

Very subjective to call but, great sound, feels improved midrange & top end with nil impact on consumption after the initial "thrash it for the sound" all the time ! ;)
