Hi I Got A S Reg E46 And Whist Driving Over Pot Holes Etc I Have A Clonking Noise Coming From Rear Left,today I Changed The Shocks And Although The Side Thats Knocking The Shock Had Completely Gone The Noise Is Still There,could The Spring Be Snapped??couldnt See Any Sign Of It Though????? I Have Heard Its Common Prob On E46??????
Please Help??????????

i had the same clunking noise and was the rear trailing arm bush. worth also checking upper mount too as they are common

would the back end also feel abit unstable???????

Trailing arm, broken spring or more likely a broken top mount. All very common and all sound similar.

def not top mount cos changed the rear shocks today and they are fine,would the trailing arm bushes make the back of the car feel like its kinda jittery when going over bumps????

Sounds like rear springs to me. Just had to replace mine as they were snapped. Oppotunity for some Eibach's though, worth every penny!

Indeed, sounds like rear springs to me too, they are really weak on the E46, I had 2 sets in my saloon in 4 years, they have an uprated part now, its slightly thicker.
