Went over a pot hole last week that managed to jar the car enough to pop open the glove box and catapult my mobile out if it's cradle - didn;t think anything of it.

So set about fitting a front arm rest on Sunday after lunch - realised there was a bit missing, so popped out to get a nut from Halfords (do love making the chavs jealous with my car :D) - but couldn't wind up the windows on the driver's side [hmm

Got back, checked the fuses - all fine, so phoned the RAC. Bloke arrives 2 hours later and procedes to check all the fuses, an unbeknown to me removes one and doesn't put it back - bastard!

He then dismantles the door to discover the connector to the driver's door window panel had come off completely - puts it back and yay! Job done.

Except now the aircon doesn't work, the dash display shows 'STOP' Check Oil Filter, Check Fan, Check Coolant - arrrrrrrrrgh.

Two hours of fiddling later, he manages to get all the error messages to disappear, but still no aircon and an EPC light still lit - and he pisses off, saying he fixed the problem he was called out for, and I should take it to VW - thanks mate! [bang

In the sunshine this morning I looked in the fuse box to discover the missing fuse - luckily had a spare - in it goes and aircon and fan are working. Have a look under the bonnet and he had loosened the filter part of my K & N Typhoon so it was almost completely removed - that would have been fun if I'd taken it for a drive....

Disconnected the battery for 10 mins to reset the ECU - have taken it for a 30m in drive and one happy car and owner

Sorry for long rant - feel better now!

No luck mate.

Your story doesn't make a very good advert for the RAC.

Speaking of hard suspension, my wind screen cracked at the weekend for no aparent reason. Fortunately insurance cover it (£50 excess). Its probably just a coincidence

When I collected the car I failed to notice a 6 " crack in the windscreen, totally hidden by the wiper blade [bang

And got a new one fitted for £50 by the bleedin' RAC

But do they replace it with a 'real' BMW windscreen, or some poor quality junk?

Blimey - that was 8 months ago! Thread from the dead :D

And nope, it was on my Golf R32 , so not a BMW screen, but it was a genuine VW one.

I was thinking of having mine done. There are a few small cracks appearing now, and 100k miles of stone chipping. There's nothing like a fresh clean and clear windscreen, but I didn't want to end up with a cheap chinese thing with the mirror mounted in the wrong place etc. Do they always use genuine parts? Are they careful not to damage the car?

I think that you can demand an OEM screen, but they probably won't have one on the van for an emergency.

Is your existing screen definitely a genuine BMW one? The replacement ones all have to be BS Kite marked, so you won't be getting anything unsafe.

It's not about being safe and unsafe, it's more like buying Kwicksave value baked beans or Heinz.

The current screen is the factory screen, the fact it has BMW markings and part numbers on the edges gives it away.

So I guess I should call them, and give the part number on the screen to make sure they get the correct one. Just seems to me that normally people like this don't care whether they do the job well, they just want to do it fast and get back to the pub or whatever. Maybe a bit harsh but you know what I mean, they are the car world equiv of an emergency call out plumber.
