Im thinking of selling my car and buying a new car probably another 3 series but with a bigger engine 325 maybe!!

Now the key questions i want to ask is whethere to get manual or automatic

Let me know what you think guys

It's entirely down to personal preference, driving style, and what you want from your car, Are you more in to cruising and not to worried about being involved in the driving experience/ or have a shitty traffic riddled commute go for the auto, If you fancy stretch the old girls legs on your favorite lightly trafficked 'B' road, or like the thought of going on some track days the manual option maybe better suited.

"You decide"

Sadly Moe, a 325 sluchbox won't be much quicker than your 318. Verts are heavy cars, lots of bulk to shift around.

If you must, which you may, go for a manual 325 Coupe. Or failing that a Z4 withthe 2.5 lump should shift some and can be picked up cheap as chips now.

But an auto 325 vert is a no no if you value any kind of performance.

Yeah really depends on what you prefer and how much you drive. I seem to be driving LOADS at peak times and so am always in traffic, auto just suited me better.

Btw - you done any quotes on a 325? what are they coming out as if you don't mind me asking? (PM me if u prefer!)

cheap as chips

Define cheap as chips?? They are still not cheap. The 325 is no slouch (192PS) is enough to get the car moving at a fair old pace - HOWEVER the automatic will dampen some of that AND is adaptive - or in other words "effing orrible"

For the minor increase in running costs opt for a 330 or if on a budget go for an earlier 328 and get the the intake manifold swapped.

Moe, I had a 325 sport with a proper gearbox (manual :p ) and it really suits the 325 engine. The 2.5 straight six is quite a revvy, buzzy engine and coupled to the manual box is a proper drivers car.

To be honest, you are either a manul or auto person. I most definately fall into the manual side and will fight for the virtues of a full manual box all day long ;) .

I told you. The auto, as said, saps power. The manual is quick'ish.

Why are you getting rid of the convertible, you've only had it 5 minutes boy!! Whats it now worth £13-15k?

Dodgyken, yes cheap as chips, £12k on 'that' online auction site. Considering they were priced at £27kish when new, seems like fairly savage depreciation to me.

To me a low mileage 2 year old 3.0 may make sense, although I personally would rather throw 18k at a cockster, although such would more likely lack the conformting warranty aspect. But horses for courses and all of that.

why u looking at the 325 and not 330. i loved my 325, only i wished it was a 330. as an auto the 330 is much quicker.

insurance on tesco.com has minimal difference for 325 and 330. also fuel consumption on 330 is better than the 325, on the auto for sure.

gearbox is purely down to personal perference.

Have to disagree with you there, having owned both, the 325 in manual guise, when revved, is not much slower that the 330(has more torque but rougher engine, longer stroke).

yeah i have heard that.

what i meant was the 325 auto lacks low down torque therefore feeling much slower than auto 330

Not driven an auto, but your sentiments sound about right.

Not sure why anyone would want a 325 auto though, performanace wise its barely quicker than a hurried 318.

The insurance on the 330 is going to be too high for it to be a valid option, infact that would be the same problem with the 325 as well.

I smell bull shit

taken from BMW:

325 Auto 0-100 KPH :8.3 sec
318 Man 0-100 KPH :9.3

thats a full 2nd in terms of car performance thats alot, in top speed

318 manual does 218 KPH
325 Auto does 237

huge diffrence there so I wouldn't say a 325 auto will be barely quicker than a 318 ... on the other hand

we should show a 325 auto vs a 325 Man

Auto 0-100 : 8.3
Man 0-100: 7.2

so a Manual is much faster from 0-100 come to top speed and there is littel diffrence 240 kph for manual and 237 kph .....

Maybe the odd one comes up at £12k - but average mileage early one would be more like £13500-15500. Early ones are closing in on being 4 years old - so 50% in 4 years is far from steep depreciation. A high spec 5er will lose that in 2 years.

Z4 still looks fresh - and are great to drive - if you can live with a firm ride!!!

......and Neil is certainly a firm ride... ;) :o

Generally the rule of thumb is that the bigger the engine, the better the auto. Autos need torque to perform well, the more they get the better. I had a manual 325 and loved it, you could really use the stick to stoke the revvy engine, but I'm not sure how I would have got on with an auto - I expect I'd have struggled with it. I'm very much a 'manual' fan though, so that wouldn't have helped.

Reality check, while I'm posting: I've driven a 55 318 a bit, and I drove my 03 325 quite a lot at the time (3 years ago now), and around town there would be little between them, honestly. The 325 needs to spread it's legs to show it's pace, so in your boots Moe I'd be tempted to hang on maybe just another year, knock up another bit of NCB and another year on the insurance age, then jump to a 330 and do it in one go.
