You may or may not have seen this on e46 fanatics but i wanted to draw your attention to a thread on e46fanatics.com basically a guy has managed to get his hands on a damaged e46 m3 engine, transmission, and other bits and bobs and is slowly rebuilding it and installing it in his e46 saloon.
He has to do it slowly because he's working 2 jobs and also goes to Uni, not just any uni, but MIT (Massachusettes Institute of Technology) which basically means he's a genius!
He's done a few other projects just click on the link to his sig, but this one is just unbelievable.
It's currently a 16page thread but is probably the best thread in car forum history. His updates are comprehensive with pictures and I've learnt more about engines than any Haynes manual can offer.
Anyway, enjoy. This guy is a mod god!

speechless.....anyone even mad enough to consider taking their e46 apart to do something noones ever done is either crazy let alone plan to take the whole engine out and stick in a M3 one :o :o :o

Think this is an isolated incident and we must bear in mind that the bloke's clearly not short of a bob or two hand rather handy with a screwdriver.
 oh my gosh i should read threads in there more often.. That is just sooooo amazing, not something the average person could be able to do for sure, thats some hard core cash to boot. Im way to poor to even dream those thoughts.... One thing to note is that on top of it all he seems like a real nice guy ..... I hate that!!! :D

I've just trawled through the full 17 pages....  .....I take my hat off to him! In order to undertake such a task, he must be exceptionally passionate about beating the odds.
and have the cash to back it up ^^^

I don't think he's mega rich. Bear in mind he's at Uni and he's working 2 jobs. He's selling his other mods to help finance so credit where credit is due.
He is a true hobbyist. You can see for yourself, it's not like he has all the right tools, he says himself, if he doesn't have a tool, he makes do with what he has.
I'm going to be keeping a close eye on his progress, major credit to him.

hehe, yeah. One small step at a time. I'm going to Asda tomorrow to buy a screwdriver. With that, we'll transplant your engine and tranny ted into my 318. I need something to practice on ;)

I personally think one of the most amazing things this guy did was do the engine rod bearing replacement himself! How cool is that! you can see how worn the stock ones were! And it takes BMW specialists 3 days or something to do it. This guy did it in a day

Bump
Update on this guy. During his M3 engine rebuild, he reaslied the injectors, airbox, hoses and pulleys were also damaged. So what does he do? AA Supercharger! Why? Because the bits he needed were included in the supercharger kit anyway!!!!
Read through his latest installment, the engine is ready for the transplant
