View Full Version : Restoring the hood
I have an e46 M3 convertible with a hood that is starting to show signs of age, bit if fading, that kind of stuff, nothing major.
i bought this stuff: http://www.vertar.com/cabriolet-care-accessories/fabric-hood-care/renovo-hood-reviver/
and tested it around the back windscreen area. i was not impressed with the results. Though it did improve it, you could clearly see that there was a layer of this stuff on the roof.
So What other products/methods could be used to restore the hood?
Ive heard that some people use Kiwi shoe polish and brush it in?(the hood is black) anyone tried this method?
Cheers

I used to use Renovo on my old TVR's hood with very good results ;) , although it did used to take a couple of applications IIRC to get to the desired look.

Best advice I ever got (from the Fasmeister) and it was bang on - vacuum. Seriously. Vacuum the roof with one of those carpet attachments, all over, nice and slow. You'll see the difference a bit like mowing the lawn. Then I use Autoglym - you get 2 bottles, a cleaner for spoilt bits like bird poo etc, and then a conditioner for the whole roof. Works an absolute treat, only once a year and you're done.
I tried it being lazy without vacuuming once, and was disappointed. Second time I pulled my finger out and it took an extra 5 minutes for a world of difference.

Does the autoglm stuff put colour back in the hood? as thats really my main concern. the renovo stuff is great for cleaning and protecting. but doesnt get a good look on restoring those slightly faded areas. and i think it would come out streaky if i done the whole hood

Not that I noticed, and it's fairly clear so I don't think that it has anything in it but cleaner.

I use autoglym.
After you spray on the conditioner (spray generously) then in circular motion i use a sponge to rub it in. looks brand new.
Hope this helps

I personally wouldnt try this, Although I have done it on my seats before
Theres no dye in the AG but where the hood is cleaner it comes up looking darker and more even. IMO
