View Full Version : To X1 or not to X1, that is the question..

I've seen a few comments recently that are making me question the otherwise logical decision of buying an X1R as opposed to a 6600/7500 and the sat nav plug-in module. Other than the fact that the X1R is a couple hundred quid more expensive, can any of you guys lay out some reasons for doing one over the other please? It's gonna be a 2-3 months before I can afford to do it, but I wanna do it properly and make the right choice when I do..

How much is the X1R? Because you can pick up an X1 for about 1100ish. There is not much difference between the X1 and the X1R besides the disc (which can be copied) and the layout of some of the buttons on the unit. I have the X1 which is an awesome unit. It boils down to how much you use the navigation. if its rarely, then you dont need a seperate unit. The main difference is with the X1:

1) insert navi disc and type in address
2) let it store the address and remove disc, then insert your music cd

The only price I've had so far is 1500 fitted for an X1R but I haven't looked hard and Ice Cold will be the first people I ask when the time comes.. The sat nav would be more of a backup than a regular thing, I have GPS on my PDA and can use the satnav software on that if it comes to it, so it's not an essential. I'd rather have a good CD/DVD head unit that can do sat nav if needed rather than the other way around. The telemetry thingy on the X1/X1R is a bit of a gimmick imo but, if I'm honest, it kinda makes me a little curious as to how much fun I could have with it ;).

I'm gonna fit a satnav module to the DVD unit if I go the seperates route anyway, just curious as to why guys like Churchwa seem very set on not going down the X1R route..

I've just spoken to Pioneer, and they are going to swap my current map DVD for the latest one FOC - [cool

And I'm sure I'l be able to lend you a backup if you want to save a few quid and get the X1 instead of the X1R ;)

the same question has been going through my mind, but because my pocket isn't allowing me to buy one yet I am also going to wait 2months or so.

But last week I did some shopping around and got the X1-R for £1169. The cheapest that you could get the X1 for was £1150.

The X1 is now discontinued so you should in theory be able to buy this cheap!

Hi guys....was just thinkin about this.....if it's all out navi performance you want....and you dont want a slow nav....want excellent sound quality...then gor for an alpine screen....can beat them!....

Thats IceColds opinion

being somebody who has an x1 i can safely say that the mapping isnt as good as with a screen and a separate navi drive.
having said that it is quite amazing how much they cram into that little thing,

navi, dvd playback(region coded),radio etc

for an entry level screen there isnt much out there that will surpass this unit.

Superb, I think my mind's set on seperates. I had a look at an Alpy in my local place yesterday but they just didn't appeal to me cosmetically. Just a personal thing I guess. Also, seperates means I can get the DVD unit first and then maybe leave the satnav and decide if I really need it. Thanks for all the feedback guys, much appreciated.

So, while we're here, can you give me a price for the bestestest Pioneer unit pls Mr Icycold. ;) Not sure if that's the 6600 or if there's a 7500 as my weird memory seems to recall. Thanks in advance.

Alpines are great they are just much more expensive. Just do the maths man, i just did and went for a Pio.

I guess you get what you pay for but they are a good 50% more, also there are fewer people with them, thus less bits on ebay ;).

Got the latest software disc today and upgraded my X1 - from a quick play it seems a tad quicker, has a few extra features (more POI overlays, more concise traffic jam info etc), different backgrounds and apparently the missing postcodes! :)
