Been trying to research a little bit on the possibility of putting an M5 lsd in my car.I understand what it does etc but will it be worth the trouble? It isn't a straight forward job by the looks of it but it has been done before.Anyone got any thoughts on it?

Mark, rear BBK ;) ............ before anything else. With your potential new purchase, they are going to look SICK!

Ive looked into this big time for mine & it does seem a very worthy upgrade but there are quite a few downsides.....i dont know if there is a significant difference between yours and mine but heres a broad strokes of what i found out.
Because you need basically the entire rear axle as well as the propshaft and diff carrier it aint gonna be cheap for parts or labour.
The other problem is that your rear diff is a 2:81 final drive ratio designed for a 5 speed auto box whereas the M5 is a 3:15 ratio designed for a manual 6 speed, meaning your rpm's are gonna be around 800rpm higher.

Have a talk with these guys http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/ they are beyond wikid & they also have a rpm/speed calculator convertor type thingy on their website :D

As Giv said. Its basically the same as putting an M3 diff into a 330. You need drive shafts/Diff/ Carrier/Prop shaft.

Ive no idea on the pricing but id pretty much say it was a decent DIY job. All the parts should bolt straight up as the do in the E46.

The ratio is your problem though.
