Guys,

Got in the car tonight to wander over to the inlaws for dinner, approx 3-4 miles from my house the engine emissions light came on...

What does this mean? The car has been running fine and is still driving normally, is it something that I should worry about?

Has anyone had this happen? and if so, what was the cause of the problem? I presume i'lll have to take the car to BMW to get it sorted, hopefully it wont cost me £££ to fix it.

I've not changed the car bar fitting a new set of Umnitza Angel Eyes this weekend, so I really can't see what has caused the problem.

Cheers

lots of things can set the CEL on so best if you get the error code read out

It sounds like a dirty lambda probe. The light will probably go out in a day or so's time. Get both probes cleaned and you should be ok.

The one on the Z4 comes on if you are very liberal with the throttle - IE the first half dozen laps of a track day normally do it.

Good point, I'll have a look at the Lambdas tonight if I get time.

Bonnet, I didn't think of that one, I'll have a look at that one too, but pretty certain that it's not that.

get the error codes read ....

the bonnet shutting issue is of course only on SMG cars, and illuminates the cog symbol on the right, not the engine symbol on the left Robin :)

best of luck

Like Roy says, pay a bit now and nothing better than to get down to the bottom of the issue rather than mess around:) That way, you know how to resolve it later. Been there and got the rags!:)

I will do, the car is booked in Thursday am at my local dealers.

Spoke to the service advisor, apparently its a fairly common problem, caused either by the Lambda Sensors or the Crankshaft Sensor.

I'll get them to run a diagnostic to check and then if it is something as simple as the Lambdas i'll get them and fit them myself, as shouldn't take too long.

I’ve had problems with that light coming on before and recorded them on the following thread:

might be worth a read. Let me know how you get on.

God that made depressing reading, is your car ok now? I'll see what the diagnosis is from the dealers tomorrow, I never thought about the MAF but thinking about it, it could be it, I run a K&N Induction kit, and in my old Subaru days the MAF was always sensitive to blowing up when induction kits were used.

The cars ok as far as the engine is concerned but I’m still having problems since changing a pair of tyres. The car started pulling to one side even after having the tracking done. The tyre place has now put the new tyres on the back and that seems to have made things better, they said drive it for about 600 miles then take it back.

This emission light seems to be a catch all for any number of things. Get the dealer to quote you before they do anything.

Yeah I will do, the car is going in first thing in the morning.

If its anything like the Lambda's / MAF / Coil Packs I can do it myself, so i'll get them to quote and then i'll either get the parts myself or i'll get them to do it if it's not offensive.
