Smart Nav questions

Does anybody know the ins and outs of the new system BMW are calling smart nav?

Can this be added to older sat nav cars?

Is it within the DVD or is it other software?

It's not DVD based, and was a load of crap IMHO - had it retrofitted in my E39 and got rid of it after a few months. Looked quite neat, but it (and the call center that it's connected to) was continuously failing to find destinations, even with full address, postcode and description - blergh.
