Holy ****** thats a lot of money.

I just rang the dealer and asked them if mine needs reflashing, and they said my car is bang on the change date and cant tell me(09/2001) so they said only way to find out is to fit the lights myself and see if I get a rave.

Heres hoping I wont need a reflash

Very nice Robin. Didn't realise they were second hand at that price. Also, you just need to buy some updated reverse/fog clusters now to complete the look. Dealers really make me laugh. Don't know how they can get away with charging that kind of money for the new switch and a re-flash.

At the end of the day as long as you're happy, then it's all good....

You'll need the re-flash either way. The build date determines whether you need a new switch or not.

So when I plug them in what am I looking for?

If they do not go crazy like a rave does that mean I am ok and just need to get a reflash, and similarly if they start flashing like mad does that definately mean I definately need a new switch?

Thanks

If not sure - whip out your LCM and check the HW and SW numbers .

If HW 2.0 (or above) SW 3.16 (or above) you should be ok.

Anything below and a new LCM is requried.

Apparantly you cant code a used LCM to your car otherwise a tamper dot will appear in the dash.

I plugged in the LED's before, and they wouldnt illuminate and it said my 2 rear lights were out, so I guess that means I need a new LCM :(

1. Hope it doesnt cost me loads

2. Hope my local BMW stealer knows what to do. When I rang them yesterday re fitting LED's to my car, the guy I spoke to didnt know what I was on about.
Felt I was speaking to someone who didnt know what LED's are or what a BMW is. In fact, he didnt even seem to know that facelift coupes have LED's

HIs final answer to me was

"If they're (the LED's) made by BMW then it should be ok regardless what year your car was built"

As far as I know they should work but only give you a bulb out error on the dash. (well it does on the e39 anyway).

If you have reps, some have built in resistors and only work upto 9/2001. The brake lights wont illuminate, but indicators and tail light should be ok.

No they wouldnt even illuminate, but maybe I installed it in wrong. I am not the best at DIY

I'm bet getting someone else to look at it for me

make sure you use the correct loom - they are labelled "left" and "right" side.

(also did this mistake myself once... hehehe)

THat sounds like a mistake I would make. As I said before, I am TERRIBLE at DIY :D

Fitted the LED's a few minutes ago, and yes, I had the wires crossed (left to right and vice versa) :o

It seems to be working fine, i.e. no mad flashing, indicators seem to work fine too. Just couldnt check the reverse lights as I was on my own, but I suspect they should be working fine.

Only thing is I get light out warning on my dash.

So I guess this means all I need is a reflash and dont need a new LCM?

My excuse for not thinking of that is I was tired LOL (or more like just having a pure dim moment), drove from Liverpool to London and back this morning without a rest :p

why does the switch make a difference?

why does the switch make a difference?

If your car is built before a certain date (09/2001), then the light switch will need to be changed.

mine is a jan 03 and i needed the switch........

Ah looks like im wrong then

This is just what BMW told me when I rang them, but thanks for pointing that out

NB Mine is a 09/2001 build and seems fine, so either the M3 is different or each car is just different

Sphinx

M3 was never facelifted as such - it may explain why it had the original switch.

I think on one of the other threads someone has mentioned what to look for on the LCM itself (to tell you whether it will be compatible). Best thing to do is call the parts department at Rydale Central in Birmingham (01212346000). Just provide your chassis number and they will be able to tell you if a new LCM is required.
