It is actually a very easy job. I am recalling from memory so if I have missed a few minor steps then don't shoot me ;) . You have to remove the gearshift boot and remove the two screws that secure the gearshift trim surround. This exposes a further two screws that hold the front part of the centre console secure. Then remove the rear ashtray by pulling it out. You can then remove two plastic expanding screw thingys. This enables the internals of the ashtray to be pulled out and exposes more screws that need removing. Undo the handbrake boot and in theory the centre console can be removed after removing the wiring for the bluetooth if fitted and hazard switch. You then simply bolt in the armrest and fit the new longer console. You may have noticed that the new console has a cutting template. In a very it is very necessary to trim the console to fit the driveshaft tunnel but in the coupe I found it isn't really necessary.
I think I have covered the major parts of removal and refitting.

Are you referring to the gearknob? If so that doesn't need to be removed.
