View Full Version : Quietest SS Exhaust

I know this probably sounds like a strange question but which is the quietest stainless after market exahaust???

The reason I ask, is that over the past few years of modding motors I have tried a few but they have always proven to be too noisy and boomy on motorway cruising (to/from work).

I would like to get a cat back system but one that is only slightly beefier over stock and not BOOMY :( .

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Raj

Just remove you centre resonator and keep the stock rear box. You'll get a beefier exhaust note. Much cheaper too. Or else, try ACS Schnitzer. Eisenmann does a street version, which should be as quiet as stock. Supersprint only has 1 type of exhaust with various tips for non-M E46, they are quiet too.

So the next question is which type of design tips do you like?

I have a liking for the twin round pipes. I have seen the Supersprint back boxes and I do like the look of them. The Eisenmann is a bit more pricier but they do look [cool .

I suppose the other question would be is, what are the potential performance benefits?

Just the back box, very insignificant. I always say buy an exhaust for the noise and not performance. If you want performance, you have to first deal with the more restrictive areas on the system which are the manifold and kats. If you don't sort out these two, a more freee flowing rear box is not going to make any difference; not at least on an E46.

I think I may go with Supersprint. Rolled twin pipes :D [cool

Cheers again Nick.

I had the same design pipes on my e46 coupe i luv the exhaust note a nice little rumble just a wee bit louder then stock and then when you floor it (especially with an induction kit) it comes to life. Mototrway driving is also cool no headace or nothing I highly recommend the supersprint exhausts if you want something which is just a little deeper then your stock system.

Cheers for that.

I have just been looking at the Eisenmann pics that Nick put on the other post of mine. Hmm, now I don't know what to do. [hmm decisions, decisions.

as said before raj depends on what noise level you want

Also nick will tell u the quailty of the Eisenmann is not as good as the super sprint nick was saying something about the welds

Overall, the Supersprint looks neater. The Eisenmann, like all custom exhausts had hand made. However, most of the exhaust are hidden underneath the car anyway, so as long as the tips look good, it's all that matters.

IMHO, you buy Eisenmann for the noise they make, not just how they look.

Hi Nick

Would I be able to do this on my 330 cab? If so, do you know who sells a centre resonator for my stock zorst?
Since seeing all those M3's yesterday I'm saving up for one, so looking to spend as little as poss on the 330 till then!

Cheers

You can get the Hi flow pipes from Teddy or Roy, but i would just take it to a powerflow dealer if your looking for the cheapest option. I got the last 2 silencers removed on sat cost me £40 for a top job too [ok

Say for example, stock exhaust with high flow pipes, how loud would that be, say high medium or low?

could I put soundpipes on instead or as well?

Cheers

Very subjective to quantify noise level unless you hear it yourself. Stock exhaust with the rear resonator removed will increase noise but will not be as refined as replacing the stock rear box with a proper aftermarket one. You get the popping when you let off the gas.

The Eisenmann Hi-Flow pipe (or 'de-kat') if that's what you're referring to comes factory assembled with the lock on spline so they bolt onto the stock down pipes and replace the front resonator. However, the shape and diametre of the pipes might not fit the OEM centre pipes. Eisenmann sound pipes are the same except they are just straight through pipes to replace the rear resonator. They are designed to fit the Eisenmann exhaust as well.

If you just want to by-pass the resonators, you might as well just get powerflow to make you the pipes and weld them on. Cheaper that way. That's what I did for my Supersprint. Even if you get the Eisenmann sound pipes/Hi-Flow pipes, they may need modifications to fit your OEM exhaust, so no point paying extra unless you have an Eisenmann exhaust that everything can just bolt onto.

Hope this helps.

I have gone with the Factory Sport sound level Eisenmann but if I do find it still to be too quiet then the Soundpipe will be added. I let you peeps know the outcome once it is fitted.

I do have to say though, that after listening to some of the exhaust notes at the meet yesterday that I may be going down the soundpipe road eventually.

Kav,

I haven't fitted an induction kit (yet ;) ), but after seeing all the CAI systems fitted yesterday I think it will deffo be on there soon. Just unsure who's to go with.

Kav,

who supplied them to you? and if you could PM us with the sort of cost I would be looking at (it would be appreciated).
