View Full Version : Anyone fancy a dyno...?

Just been looking online for a good company to take my car to for a dyno run/rolling road run, it will be in the south somewhere (hampshire).

Just thought i'd ask if anyone else would be up for getting there car dynoed???

Once i find a good company i'll let ya know, cost will be about £60 from what i've seen.

I know that on some rolling roads it is hard to get accurate figures for automatics (not sure why but sure some1 will chime in) so at least i've warned ya.

Will post more details tomorrow as and when i know anything.

Good chance to see if your car is really pushing out what you think it is, and would be a good mini meet i suppose.

sounds like a good plan for that price. Depending on date, I'm in

Im in.

I spoke to the main man Mud about this recently and he suggested we get some sort of mobile "chip & Tune" company to prove the results that they claim ect ect.

My cars bog standard and hopefully i get a decent exhaust soon.

If we go for a weekend and get a few of us together the price may even come down a tiny bit more.

I'll get some dates and some locations tomorrow and maximum number of cars allowed (probably a dozen max i would have thought) and get back to ya tomorrow.

What about Regal in Southampton where Roy had that day late 2005? Presumably they know how to dyno M3s aswell now that Roy's shown them.. ;) Roy had that at around 30 quid a car, so that would save some costs if they're willing to do that deal again.

I'd recommend DSA, formerly G Force. Used them last year and going back this March.

http://www.dsautomotives.co.uk/pages/contactus_set.htm

Who ever you use be sure they have run your type of car before, the setting up of the dyno is crucial to getting accurate/comparable results.

I might be up for this depending on date, location etc.

Another vote here for G Force, I have been to many rolling road meets here and they have managed to get more than 30 cars done in a day no probs for about £30 a car.

I'd be very interested in a DD to see if the M's making the numbers it should be.

Depends on time, and location obviously.

Right ok guys this is were im at:

www.sussexperformancecentre.co.uk
*Sussex performance centre: Didn't bother getting costs as they have to BY LAW finish all power runs by 1pm (council) and i thought logistically this would cause problems with people coming from varying distances and we could easily have 15 cars and to get them all done in a short space of time might cause problems.

www.surreyrollingroad.co.uk
*Surrey rolling road: Very impressive company (guy knew his stuff). They are very busy though and the earliest for a Saturday power run day is 10th march. Costs 6+ £40, 14+ £35 (£15 deposit required per car). My opinion seems like the best.

www.dsautomotives.co.uk
*DS Automotives: Maximum 12/15 cars for a day. But the main problem is they require a 50% deposit per car. When i get numbers they will quote costs.

www.dmsautomotive.com
DMS: Basically require numbers before will say anything. Also offered discounts on rolling road tuning (live remapping). Not the most informative i have to say.

Personnel opinion is surrey rolling road, knew there stuff and booked till march! sign of a busy company maybe, also give us time to get more interest and maybe get the full 25 cars?

Gonna call Regal autosport now but last time i was there i wasn't mega impressed, there power figures were all over the place, which i think Chaos can testify to.

Ive heard good things about surrey RR from other forums.

And they use a Dyno Dynamics RR which is good to see (one of the more consistent dyno's)

Also heard very good things about Surrey RR but didn't suggest it as you seemed keen to stay south coast. IMO it'd be worth the drive, PistonHeads use them for their RRs and they've got a great track record with those guys.

I dont mind travelling a bit if its a good company who know there stuff and SRR really impressed me, its only just over an hour from Portsmouth so aint that bad.

Mark if you wanna have a sniff around and see what you think by all means do so. Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there.

I had a little look around today for other possibilities, and really couldn't find anywhere better in terms of location and reputation than SRR.

The only other place i could think of that i know are very good is WRC technologies but there in Silverstone which may be quite a trek for some.

I'm more than happy to go to SRR personally.

Just went there to have a nose about, but its shut :( .Still the site offers excellent parking very close to the building. The roads leading upto the site are very interesting as well, but a word of warning we frequently get to recover cars that have misjudged this road because of the bends, surface and junctions.I will try to get another visit down there this week to see if the place is open.

Anyone else got any other thoughts on this form of dyno??? bit of an unknown to me... http://www.tdi-plc.com/

Mark: Thanks for that mate, keep us posted, still seems like the best to me.

I used Torque developments years back when i had a turbo'd XR4i. I drove the car down to them cos i wanted a new Micro dynamics ECU wired up, to help with upping the fuel pressure ect. They took 3 days to do it, when i went to collect the car it was still in the workshop on the rolling road, after an hour or so a bloke came in and said the work was done and someone was bringing the car out for me, i stood outside, heard my car fire up, sounded nice i thought.........then it came out of the workshop in reverse at a fair rate of speed and smashed strait into a parked car!! ah!! wont be taking my car there again! That was about ten years ago now though, so the blokes prob got some driving experiance under his belt. Should b ok.

I'm up for it! If my car aint done by then i'll take the track day car.

As far as i know hub dynos are about the most accurate as you don't have to take the rolling resistance of the tyre into account and you eliminate the traction problems some cars can encounter, but they take a long time to get the cars on and off, not a problem if your mapping the car but not good for a DD, I know for a fact that Abbey Motorsport (Skyline specialists) who use a DynaPak hub dyno refuse to hold DD for this reason.

I'll give TDI a call tomorrow and see what theu say. See what Mark comes back with from SRR as well then we can get something booked.

Chaos
08-01-2007, 11:44 PM
You're looking at 2-3 times the price of a dyno at SRR if you go to TDI, I'd expect. If you want a precise figure then it's probably worth it, if you want a ballpark within a bhp or two then it probably isn't. (Just so you aren't surprised if they tell you they want £85 an hour and it takes that long minimum to do the runs.)

I could be interested in Surrey RR...

There was another company that came recommended in Hampshire, but I can't remember the name now! arrgh! I think I deleted the details off my phone too only just a fortnight ago... Think they had Speed in their name... or S something ...not sure.

Okay, waiting for a return phone call this morning to confirm prices and availability, when I have dates etc I will post up a new thread for people to add their names.I think the last time I spoke to them it would have to have been in March which will suit us anyway.

AMD in Bicester have one of the most accurate rolling roads. Thats not too far for you southerners. Last time i went it was £25 per car based on 15 cars.

Sounds very resonable, I'm paying £40 for a run at DSA ex G-force and there are 25 cars going.

Have been to AmD for a rolling road day before and they actually did my re-map on the D. Deffo very good and can deffo vouch for them.

@ Mike - Mine is an auto and they did my re-map so shouldn't be too much of an issue. Although, they did say it was a little more difficult.

but how many runs do you get for £25? You need at least 2 for comparison. I've heard good things about Surrey RR. THey also do good deals for groups and arn't that far from the M25.
