Guys, anyone got any views on in-car DVD Players/screens?

I want a stand alone one as I don't want to mess around with the current set up. Can the HK System (BMW Business with 6 CD Changer) handle another input? There does seem to be a "Line" function on the headunit.

Wishful thinking?

Sorry, should've said no Sat Nav. maybe its not the BMW Business I have then? Anyway, std head unit with HK setup (factory).

Your Standard business head unit has a single line in, however, that's been used up with the 6 disc changer.

However, you can have an independant screen and single-slot or multi-changer DVD setup. You'll also have to splice the input into the speakers to get some sound, and that's not the easiest thing to do.

Your best bet is to go to a pro but make sure they know what they are doing. I am pursuing a custom ICE install in the next 2-3 weeks. I phoned up one place "sorry mate, you got HK, no way to add-on to that", I didn't tell him I already had an Infinity Basslink locked into working with my HK setup.

Called another place, couldn't have been more helpful, they've done e46's before with the HK setup, they talked me through ideas and I'm seeing them in a weeks time with the view to getting them to do my install.

Fas - how did you hook up the Basslink to your HK setup ?

Honestly? No idea. Durgesh did the main install for me.

I know there are a couple of wires coming out from the back of the head unit to allow me to control the bass from the CD head-unit.

Run the cables to the boot and put them in (I think) high-input into the basslink. Give the basslink some power and that's pretty much it.

I do know that the Basslink is VERY easy to install, but as I had someone else to do it I didn't pay too much attention. Maybe Digs can provide more info?

Yeh - I didnt think the BMW headunits had RCA outputs, only speaker wires. The HK amp takes high level inputs, so was wondering if the Basslink does too.

I'd be interested if anyone's simply replaced the HK amp with a better one which plugs straight in - but also allows the addition of a subwoofer ?

HK amp is non-replaceable. It's so closely tied into the setup that replacement is virtually impossible and 100% not plug and play with any other system.

Either add the basslink (yes it accepts high-level inputs) or custom install.

My basslink will be up for sale very soon (;) )

How's the basslink sound compared to stock HK ? (Ive got a coupe - i think the verts have a woofer already.. did you replace this, or add it as an addition).

Btw - how different is the HK in a vert to a coupe ?

coupe and vert HK setups are pretty different. Coupes have 2 6x9 subs in the parcel shelf, the vert has a 6 inch sub which sits in the ski-hatch and folds out of the way for thru-loads.

Coupe's also have the speaker button on the console to turn the HK Amp on and off, verts don't have this and I've yet to figure out why. Door speakers are the same.

In my setup, the HK sub is still working alongside the Infinity setup
